artist statement

I have always had a love for art.  Some of my favourite memories growing up are of sitting to the table with my grandfather, drawing and painting birds, houses, fish, and boats for hours on end.

The inspiration for my artwork comes mostly from nature and all of its elements.  Being from Newfoundland originally, I especially enjoy painting seascapes.  I have always been fascinated with the sea, its power and ever changing shades and moods.  I love to paint boats, and the hand built wharves and sheds, which are so important to the Maritime people.

My art is done in a realistic style.  I often use photographs and sketches as a guide; however my paintings are not photo replications.  My distinct artistic style is evident in all of my work through my use of colour and brushstrokes.  I have been painting for fifth teen years.  I paint with oils and watercolours.

My artistic ability is something I was born with and I am very grateful for.  I paint because I enjoy it. I am proud of all my work, and I am thrilled when someone else likes it.  I look forward to sharing my art with others and hope they enjoy it also.

selected biography

Medina Genge was born and raised on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland.  She moved to Nova Scotia in 2000 to attend Dalhousie University.  Along with her husband, she has made her home in Middle Sackville, but continues to visit Newfoundland regularly.

In 1994 Medina began studying Fine Art at Memorial University of Newfoundland.  However, she decided to follow a different career path.  After working as a Dental Assistant, she returned to university to continue her studies.  In 2002 she graduated from Dalhousie University with a Diploma in Dental hygiene.  Throughout the years Medina continued to paint.

Medina has been painting for fifth teen years, and continues to explore and develop her artistic capabilities and talent.  She is mainly a self-taught artist who paints with oils and experiments with watercolours.   Medina’s paintings consist of landscapes, seascapes, floras, and wildlife.  She loves to paint boats, wharfs, and anything to do with the sea.  Medina tries to capture the beauty and essence of everything she paints.

Painting provides immense joy and satisfaction to Medina.  It gives her a sense of pride and accomplishment, which she loves to share with others.   With the encouragement of family and friends, Medina has chosen to pursue her passion for art.  Medina is a member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Designers Craft Council, the Dartmouth Visual Art Society, and the Contemporary Art Society.  Medina’s art has been exhibited at Advantage Frame and Gallery, Eyelevel Gallery, and Visual Arts Nova Scotia’s; Art in a Box.  Her art can also be seen at the Lower Sackville Wellness Centre, Art Choices at Sue Beaver’s Place, the Alderney Landing Farmers Market and by appointment at her home studio in Middle Sackville.
